What was the brief?

WRT their house, yes, we can call them homeowners, but we found 2 genuine friends ( Chetan & Kamini) with this quest of Interiors. And when people come with sincere intentions to trust the Designer and follow the path (of course with the feedback) but having faith in our vision.

Initial brief was simple to keep the home as earthy as possible. It had to be an extension of their personality, I.e welcoming with a lot of warmth with a good storage for the young ones.

One thing that we realized is they are quick decision makers and trusts the instincts which resulted in an outcome beyond all our thoughts.

Why the name ‘Amoda’?

Amoda captures the essence of the home. as soon as you enter the home, the relaxing atmosphere will soothe you down. Going by the literal meaning it means Pure Happiness & Unlimited Joy. Which also justifies the whole journey, nothing short of a joy ride for us and the satisfaction of the clients during each site visit showed their happiness with the progress.

Design philosophy.

Amoda embraces the simplicity of Japandi, married with the rustic charm of Wabi Sabi, with a touch of culturally inspired (Indian) Interiors. Here natural elements take center stage with a palette inspired by muted tones. It adopts raw finishes, weathered wood, lime plaster and hand crafted elements to invite a tactile experience.

Project walkthrough

Before entering you would be awestruck by the entrance paneling with a hint of lime plaster outside the gate. Once inside, a small passage takes you to the living Area which is kind of attached to Kitchen and Dining. Initial layout given by the builder was kind of a closed kitchen with just a small entry to it. We demolished the entire partition wall to give that grand feeling and to plan the kitchen storage. One of the unwanted dry balcony windows was also scrapped off with a small change in Dry balcony door placement. Once it’s all open, lightness was the first feeling that everyone felt. To further augment that earthiness we scraped off builders windows and even Living balcony gate. This was all day one. Coming to the end result, the living room & kitchen sets the tone of the entire house with carefully chosen earthy textures. Lime finish and teak wood veneer plays a pivotal role here and gives you that atmosphere to unwind yourself after all your hustles.

Adjacent to the living room is Kitchen and the partition is created using a White Quartz breakfast table with a small Dining table. While the below counter storage is massively inspired by the wooden texture with grooves and will definitely make you appreciate the fine craftsmanship, the above counter storage is the area finished with a muted PU tone gives it a much needed break following with a similar tone wall tile.

Another highlight of the living room is that small TV console, with some shelves above it, and to break the wooden monotony cane partition was planned. Even the small elements like the sofa back wall is an element in itself. While the balcony window and the gate are all rebuilt using teak wood to add some more warmth. And if you notice the common element it would be arches, be it entrance arch, dining partition wall, temple grooves, dining table design.

Before entering the living room, the passage has a hidden door towards the Guest room or multipurpose room. Where the requirements were straight forward for a bed and some storage, we proposed Murphy bed to utilize the space when no guests are there and carefully executed it. Once the bed is closed, it’s impossible for anyone to judge that there is a bed in the Guest room. The highlight of this room is that customized wallpaper to elevate the entire mood and that pastel shade laminate finish makes it airy.

Coming to the Master Room which embraces simple living and sticking to essentials. The bed, wardrobe, TV console and Study unit are all finished with a warm teak veneer and the tone was once again set to be earthy here.

Last one is the Kids room, which was designed with a Space theme as the clients had  2 children (preschooler and a toddler). And the requirement was to design it keeping the next phase of their life. Specially customized Solar systems and that astronaut wallpaper added to kids excitement and Swedish ladder was the kids demand. Here as well, overall color scheme is very muted with teak and beige laminate combination

What was the design inspiration for the scheme?

Where have you sourced the furniture and art from? Or is it custom-made? Have you re-used any old furniture?

All the furniture is custom made except the center table which is outsourced from Home Centre.

Material detail.

Some of the key furniture items were:

Swing : Was one of the 1st requirements that came from clients and was a difficult task to execute it ( tbh we thought once into design phase, we can convince client that this would not fit with the current space ) being a small living area. But we took it head on as a challenge and executed it with meticulously fine details. Overall plan was not to make it look bulky but at the same time should draw your attention.

Sofa : Following a similar detail as Swing, this piece will make you not to wander around and you can gaze at this beauty all day. That sleek vertical bar detail, on both sofa and swing, perfectly amplifies their charm.

Dining : To blend it with the overall theme, planning was crisp and the decision was made to go with a wooden veneer top and the chairs are carefully crafted in teak wood with a touch of cane to break the overall wooden texture.

Temple : As the temple was coming as part of Living and Kitchen and it was a dedicated full unit just for idols. So it had to be planned well and we went ahead with the same veneer but added those curved grooves to stand out amongst other furniture pieces and was executed with openable and foldable shutters to not block the area.

Master Room: This was finished with warm teak veneer, with a beige headboard and the overall background was veneer grooves. Besides bed wardrobes are placed and to break the wood monotony they are added with the charm of cane sheets. That overall wall sets the tone of the room and the TV unit with a similar grooves adds that character.

Guest Room : Murphy Bed finished with a pastel laminate, can we convert it to a multipurpose room on demand. To add beauty, we customized a special wallpaper and placed it perfectly between bed and wardrobe.

What were the challenges of working on this project?

Swing is what comes to our mind while thinking of challenges as it was a small space and we didn’t want to burden the space with a lot of elements. But with careful planning and swift execution we played around with this challenge. Other than that, clients were so  categorized with their decisions and choices that challenges were addressed way before they turned into obstacles. Plus, the trust they had on us made us equal stakeholders on decisions which is a dream come true for any designer.
